Kyra:
I'm Kyra, from Falcon UC.

[Visuals]

[Visuals]
Cuts to Rishabh talking to Kyra.

Rishabh voice-over:
I hear your team is a high school team. That means you're all between 16 to 18 years of age?

[Visuals]
Cuts to Kyra.

Kyra:
Some of us are actually even younger. We had some ninth graders on the team…

[Visuals]
Cuts to montage of younger team members, before cutting back to Kyra.

Kyra voice-over:
… so they were 14 at Indianapolis event, and that was definitely interesting. That meant we didn't have as many people that could drive, but it was a lot of fun.

[Visuals]
Cuts to Rishabh.

Rishabh:
And you won first place at your first ever Shell Eco-marathon earlier this year…

[Visuals]
Cuts to team members rolling vehicle on track.

Rishabh voice-over:
… resulting in you being here at the world championship?

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kyra and Rishabh.

Kyra:
It's crazy. Honestly, none of us ever thought it would happen.

[Visuals]
Cuts to just Kyra.

Kyra:
We all thought our teacher was a little bit insane when he told us about this, but it ended up being really cool.

[Visuals]
Cuts to Kyra and Rishabh, before cutting back to just Kyra.

Krya:
We put in a lot of work, I guess… a lot hours…

[Visuals]
Cuts to three-way split of team members working on vehicles.

Kyra voice-over:
… and it paid off for sure.

[Visuals]
Cuts to further shot of team members working on vehicle, followed by vehicle running on track.

Rishabh voice-over:
And I see your team being in action here. What gives your team the edge?

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kyra.

Kyra:
I think something that's really helped our team is all the things we've done
to save weight on the car. For example, our frame is made out of steel…

[Visuals]
Cuts to close up of steel frame.

[Text displays]
Frame is made of steel

Kyra voice-over:
… so we've drilled like 5000 holes in our car.

[Visuals]
Cuts to close up of drilled holes on car, followed by three-way split of other holes on the vehicle.

Kyra voice-over:
We've we've actually cut out 40% of the weight…

[Text displays]
Cut 40% of the weight

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kyra.

Kyra:
… while making the frames stronger.

[Visuals]
Cuts to Rishabh.

Rishabh:
Why is vehicle weight reduction so important at Shell Eco-marathon?

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kyra.

Kyra:
Weight reduction just makes the car go faster…

[Visuals]
Cuts to vehicle running on track before cutting back to Kyra.

Kyra:
Putting that power down If you're moving less weight, it makes the car go faster, quicker…

[Visuals]
Cuts to vehicles running on track before cutting back to Kyra.

Kyra:
… and then you spend less energy doing that and you can let it coast for longer too.

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Rishabh.

Rishabh:
Tell us some more about some unique features in your vehicle.

[Visuals]
Cuts to team members working on vehicle.

[Text displays]
Suspension in the front

Kyra voice-over:
It actually has suspension in the front, which gives you a smoother ride throughout like turns and stuff like that when it’s more bumpy.

[Visuals]
Cuts to vehicles rounding corner.

Kyra voice-over:
Allows you to hold your line, which makes the course shorter and helps with the fuel efficiency.

[Text displays]
Helps with fuel efficiency

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kyra.

Kyra:
Another really unique thing is the fact that our car is a manual.

[Visuals]
Cuts to driver inside vehicle.

[Text displays]
Three speed shifter

Kyra voice-over:
It's got a 3 speed shifter in it.

[Visuals]
Cuts to vehicle running on track.

Kyra voice-over:
And so you know, you press a button, it goes up and down in gears. And being in those other gears gives you a different speed range…

[Text displays]
Gives you a different speed range

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kyra and Rishabh.

Kyra:
… and also consumes amounts of fuel at those speeds, which will hopefully help us out here.

[Visuals]
Cuts to just Kyra before cutting back to Kyra and Rishabh.

Rishabh:
Well that’s absolutely stunning…

[Visuals]

My name is Arjun and I'm the team manager of Team PRAVEGA.

[Visuals]
Cuts to Arjun and Rishabh.

Rishabh:
So what inspired you to create an app to connect Shell Eco-marathon teams globally?

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Arjun.

Arjun:
There are teams from India, and there are a lot of teams from India who actually want to participate in the Shell Eco-marathon.

[Visuals]
Cuts to three-way split of team members rolling vehicle outside garage.

Arjun voice-over:
So considering our distance from India to Indonesia…

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Arjun.

Arjun:
… and the shipping cost and… there's a lot of logistics that's going behind this.

[Visuals]
Cuts to vehicle at starting line with waving signal flag.

Arjun voice-over:
So we are facing problems…

[Visuals]
Cuts to three-way split of vehicle running on track and team members talking.

Arjun voice-over:
… while we wanted to ship our car from here to the competition.

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Arjun and Rishabh.

Arjun:
But that made us think, like, why can't we help each other so that the community could build in a better way.

Rishabh:
Well, that sounds amazing because you've created an impact, not just for your team, but also for all the teams that are currently in Eco-marathon and the future ones.

[Visuals]
Cuts to team members using the app on their phones.

Rishabh voice-over:
So tell me more about the features of your app.

Arjun voice-over:
So the app has a group chat, as well as a direct messaging function.

Arjun voice-over:
… and how we can help each other and what we can do
to make this all better for everyone.

Arjun voice-over:
Ultimately it's to connect people.

[Visuals]

We are two universities united, INSA and UPS…

[Visuals]
Cuts to just Jeremy.

Jeremy:
… and we want to make the most sustainable car as possible.

[Visuals]
Cuts to Rishabh.

Rishabh:
Where did the idea come from to develop a lightweight paint for your vehicle?

[Visuals]
Cuts to team members working on vehicle.

Jeremy voice-over:
It's always been in our DNA at TIM UPS INSA to create the lightest car as possible…

[Text displays]
Create the lightest car possible

[Visuals]
Cuts to three-way split of paint close-ups.

Jeremy voice-over:
… and to push it to the next step, was to make our paint the lightest as possible.

[Visuals]
Cuts to Rishabh.

Rishabh:
Tell us how you got the opportunity to work with an aircraft manufacturer to achieve this.

[Visuals]
Cuts to both Jeremy and Rishabh.

Jeremy:
At Toulouse we're known for our aircraft companies.

[Visuals]
Cuts to close-up of vehicle panel before panning across to team members.

Jeremy voice-over:
It was, well, the simplest answer for us because planes have the same problem as us.

[Visuals]
Cuts to vehicle running on track.

Jeremy voice-over:
We need to make them lighter so they can be more sustainable and consume less energy.

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Jeremy.

Jeremy:
And we have exactly the same problem on our car.

[Visuals]
Cuts to Jeremy and Rishabh.

Rishabh:
And how much difference did that make to the weight of your vehicle?

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Jeremy.

Jeremy:
It made a lot because…

[Visuals]
Cuts to vehicle parked on track.

Jeremy voice-over:
… we lost almost 4.5 kilograms on the car at the end.

[Text displays]
Lost 4.5kg

[Visuals]
Cuts to team members laughing in garage.

Jeremy:
So it's a big part of the weight because we went from 29 kilograms to 25.

[Visuals]
Briefly cuts to Jeremy before cutting to Jeremy and Rishabh.

Rishabh:
Why is vehicle weight reduction so important in Shell Eco-marathon?

[Visuals]
Cuts to Jeremy.

Jeremy:
When you work on your vehicle, there are 3 things that you need to work on.

[Visuals]
Cuts to montage of different shots of vehicle.

Jeremy voice-over:
Aerodynamics, motor and weight.

[Text displays]
1. Aerodynamics
2. Motor
3. Weight

[Visuals]
Cuts to vehicle running on track.

Jeremy voice-over:
… and to make it as light as possible is important because you will need less energy to make it move.

[Text displays]
= Less Energy

[Visuals]
Cuts to vehicles crossing finishing line and spectators cheering.

Jeremy voice-over:
And this energy will be kept on even longer because there are less weight
to applied on the tyres.

[Visuals]
Cuts to Jeremy and Rishabh.

Rishabh:
Well, it's amazing how you're leveraging energy efficiency into your vehicle.

[Visuals]
Cuts to Jeremy before cutting back to Jeremy and Rishabh.

About this series

At the heart of the competition is a challenge with long-lasting implications for us all: How can we travel the farthest using as little energy as possible? Tasked with creating a vehicle that can test this theory and change how we see and understand mobility, students embark on a journey that will push their design, technology, and engineering skills to the limit both on and off the track.

Shell Eco-marathon embodies the spirit of young changemakers who demonstrate perseverance, collaboration, and innovation.

Shell Eco-marathon teams from around the global came together at the World Championship 2023 in Bangalore, India from October 10 – 12, 2023. Whilst these young STEM students may come from different countries, cultures, and educational curriculums, they all share a common goal, to create a more energy-efficient future.
