The 2021 Virtual Programme – a step into the future.
2021 saw the launch of the first ever virtual programme with a new global Virtual League where teams earn points across a range of different challenges. From some brand-new competitions like Pitch the Future and the new Autonomous Programming Competition to the well-known Off-Track Awards this virtual programme had it all!
As the season is now over, you can find out which lucky teams have topped the Virtual League Table and those that won the individual competitions. Plus, in case you missed it live, you can watch the 2021 Season Finale show here.
Looking ahead to Shell Eco-marathon in 2022 – we are aiming to get back out on a track, when and where safely possible across the regions.

Virtual Technical Inspection
League competitions / Online Event
This year’s Technical Inspection took place in a virtual environment, where teams demonstrated their vehicle’s compliance with a selection of technical rules.
Off-track Awards

The Off-Tracks look beyond the car, celebrating the range of skills that go into each Shell Eco-marathon project. In 2021 the awards went completely virtual, but continue to celebrate and award the teams’ qualities of collaboration, empathy and innovation.
Pitch the Future
League competitions / Online Event
A competition that challenged students to apply their technical skills to real world problems and come up with solutions for a series of energy-related mini-challenges. The best teams then pitched their ideas in a virtual environment to a panel of industry experts.
Autonomous Programming Competition
League competitions / Online Event
Developed in partnership with Southwest Research Institute, this completely virtual competition challenges participants to develop path planning, perception and control algorithms for an autonomous vehicle, and then put it to the test in a simulated environment.
