Nicole and her team PUP Hygears from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines are out to prove the strength of women in engineering.

Out of the 104 members that make up PUP Hygears, almost half are women. Team Manager Nicole Rose Tugay recounts how people initially doubted the mostly female team, and shares how their team’s participation in Shell Eco-marathon Indonesia in 2022 proved them wrong. They want to empower others and show that they shouldn’t hesitate to do the things they want just because they are women.

Aside from representing women in engineering, the team is also dedicated to advancing technology in the Philippines while caring for the earth through finding sustainable solutions. They collected used plastic bottles from their university in a fun and engaging way. They then processed the plastic waste they collected into filaments used in 3D printing parts of their vehicle.

“Energy efficient vehicles… will play a big part for us to support a greener future.”
